POTTERPALOOZA!!

HARRY POTTER MANIA: This movie cannot stop making money. It has broken the record for highest midnight gross, highest single day gross, highest domestic opening weekend, highest global opening weekend and highest IMAX gross. I personally did not see any of the 7 Potter films. It sounds like if I am going to blog about movies I should. The debate is whether or not POTTER can or should be nominated for Best Picture this year. Since is it the last of the series it would be a great year to nominate it to celebrate the entire POTTER accomplishments. But, they did all get rave reviews and multiple directors had their hand in the series. Unlike THE LORD OF THE RINGS where Peter Jackson directed them all and got a Best Picture win. The success of THE DEATHLY HOLLOWS PART 2 though cannot be ignored this year. My bet is that it gets a Best Picture nomination as well as sweeping the technical awards.

OPRAH?

Rumors have been running rapid that Oprah Winfrey will host this years Academy Awards. Oprah's people deny it and say they have no idea where the rumor came from. Hopefully they can find an alternative to Oprah.

IRON LADY TEASER

Here is the first teaser showing Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher. Or should I say Best Actress of this year teaser....

EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE

During a recent visit to New York City I came across what was clearly a movie set. The trailers lined both sides of the street, and a crew with lights and camera were working on the side walk. The movie buff that I am had to check the Internet to see what was filming in New York that day. It said a movie starring Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock titled EXREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE was shooting that day on the same street I was on. I looked around for a few minutes assuming it was another Sandra Bullock romantic comedy that would come and go. Boy was I wrong. It turns out that the movie is based on a book with the same name written in 2005.  It is about a nine year old boy who lost his father September 11th.  He finds a key to door left by his dead father. He desperately searches for what the key will open to learn more about his father and his life. It originally was set to release on 2012, but it was recently announced that it will be released this year in time for the award season. Some have already predicted this as winning Best Picture. There has not been an official trailer released yet, but I will keep you updated on the release.

OPENING TODAY

4th of July always a big movie weekend:

TRANSFORMERS 3-(award potential: maybe a technical nomination) Opened Wednesday and has had the biggest opening day of 2011 at around $37 million. Reviews have not been good. Rotten Tomatoes has it only 37%. But, it will mostly likely win the weekend Box Office. As long as they keep making money we will see more TRANSFORMER movies. Regardless of Shia or no Shia.

LARRY CROWNE-(award potential: none) Romantic comedy Co-written and directed by Tom Hanks.
CARS 2 will beat it this weekend.

MONTE CARLO-(award potential: none) Some girls go to France or something.
