CURRENT STATE OF THE RACE

Well THE SOCIAL NETWORK has been released. It performed a little less than hoped. It was predicted to do $25 million, but ended up at around $23 million. The movie also had its official academy screening and although the member are not supposed to speak, the comments were mixed. Some loved it and applauded at the end. Others said that it was "too cold" or had too many flaws to win Best Picture.
All I keep hearing is that its too early to begin predicting nominations. Especially between THE SOCIAL NETWORK and THE KING'S SPEECH.  There are still a lot of films to be released before the end of the year. The trailer for TRUE GRIT was just released (link is below). The trailer looks like a definite Best Picture nomination.  It will be interesting to see if THE SOCIAL NETWORK cannot maintain itself. Sometimes films that come out strong too early end up fading away. It could come down to TRUE GRIT or THE KING'S SPEECH. But we still have to wait and see what BLACK SWAN does. It may be too gritty for a Best Picture, but Natalie Portman is a good bet for a Best Actress nomination. We also still have to see what 127 HOURS and THE FIGHTER do.
Jesse Eisenberg as Best Actor does not seem likely at this point. He has a great chance at a nomination, but Eisenberg is playing a neurotic guy while Jesse admits to being neurotic in real life. He is really just reading Aaron Sorkins great script, so not sure how much acting is really happening. Colin Firth in THE KING'S SPEECH is playing King George VI who stammers (not stutters) and from what I have read really plays the part with emotion. Although Jeff Bridges won last year he cannot be counted out for TRUE GRIT.
